THERAPY AND EMDR FOR HIGH-FUNCTIONING ADULTS IN MICHIGAN, OHIO, AND FLORIDA
IN-PERSON AVAILABILITY IN ANN ARBOR, MI
A thoughtful space for trauma, anxiety, and deeper emotional clarity.
Hi, I’m Julie Artinian Callaway. I’m a licensed therapist who works with high-functioning adults navigating anxiety, trauma, burnout, and overwhelm, often while carrying a lot of responsibility in their daily lives.
My approach is relational, compassionate, and depth-oriented, with an emphasis on slowing things down enough to understand what’s really happening beneath the surface.
I aim to offer a grounded, supportive space where you can feel genuinely met, explore patterns with curiosity rather than judgment, and begin to create meaningful, lasting change in how you relate to yourself and your experiences.
This work includes professionals in caregiving fields such as education, first response, mental and physical health, the military, and related roles, with a particular focus on those in high-demand caregiving professions.
Many of my clients are thoughtful, self-reflective individuals and professionals who are seeking more than quick fixes—they are interested in depth, understanding patterns at their core, and creating meaningful, lasting change in how they relate to themselves and their experiences.
Trying to navigate life’s challenges alone can be difficult.
You are worthy of love, acceptance, and healing.
It’s okay to ask for help: we are all human!

EMDR Therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured, evidence-based approach designed to help people heal from trauma and distressing life experiences. By using guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation, EMDR helps the brain reprocess painful memories so they no longer feel overwhelming. It’s a powerful therapy that can bring lasting relief from symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, and other emotional challenges—helping clients move forward with greater peace and resilience.

Trauma-Informed Therapy is an approach to mental health care that recognizes the widespread impact of trauma and prioritizes safety, trust, and empowerment in the healing process. Rather than focusing solely on symptoms, this method considers how past traumatic experiences may influence current thoughts, behaviors, and emotions. Trauma-informed therapists create a supportive environment where clients feel respected, understood, and in control of their treatment, helping them build resilience and reclaim their well-being.
Specializing in:
Anxiety
Anxiety can manifest in many different ways, from generalized worry to panic attacks. I am experienced in working with individuals struggling with anxiety disorders, including social anxiety, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and phobias. I provide practical tools and strategies to help you manage anxiety symptoms, challenge unhelpful thought patterns, and cultivate a greater sense of calm and resilience.
Trauma
Humans are exposed to various situations which may cause us to react by fight, flight, freeze or fawning. I specialize in helping individuals heal from past traumatic experiences, including but not limited to childhood trauma, interpersonal violence, accidents, and natural disasters. Working with the mind and body reactions to events can bring about lasting change. I am trained in trauma-informed care and utilize evidence-based techniques to help you process and integrate difficult memories, reduce symptoms of trauma, and regain a sense of safety and control in your life.
Grief and Loss
Losing a loved one is one of life's most challenging experiences, and navigating the grief process can feel overwhelming. Whether you are grieving the death of a family member, friend, or pet, or experiencing other types of loss such as divorce, health or job loss, I am here to provide compassionate support and guidance. I help you honor your unique grief journey, explore your emotions, and find meaning and healing as you adjust to life without your loved one.
In particular:
Mindfulness
Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to the present moment—on purpose and without judgment. It helps increase moment-to-moment awareness of your thoughts, feelings, and body sensations, as well as your environment and surroundings. Rather than getting caught in the past or future, mindfulness invites you to notice what is happening right now with curiosity and openness.
In therapy, mindfulness is used to support clients in observing their internal experiences—thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations—without immediately reacting to them. This non-judgmental awareness creates space to respond more intentionally, improving emotional regulation and reducing stress. Mindfulness practices often include guided imagery, breathing techniques, body scans, and meditation, all of which help anchor attention in the present moment.
Rooted in approaches like mindfulness and often integrated into trauma-informed care, mindfulness offers practical tools for building resilience, increasing self-awareness, and fostering a deeper sense of balance and connection in everyday life.
EMDR
EMDR therapy is a structured therapy approach that helps individuals process distressing memories and experiences. It involves activating both sides of the brain through bilateral stimulation, which can be achieved through eye movements, tactile taps, or auditory tones. This bilateral stimulation is thought to mimic the rapid eye movement (REM) sleep phase where processing of information occurs naturally. This therapy is not used for anxiety, depression, phobias and other issues as well. Ask me for more information if you are interested.
How Does EMDR Work?
During an EMDR session, clients are guided to recall distressing memories or experiences while simultaneously focusing on bilateral stimulation. This helps to facilitate the processing of these memories, allowing the brain to reprocess the information in a way that reduces the emotional charge associated with them. As a result, clients often report a decrease in the intensity of their symptoms and a greater sense of empowerment and resolution.
Somatic EMDR
Somatic EMDR is a gentle, body-centered approach to healing that combines traditional EMDR with practices that help you tune into your body’s natural wisdom. While EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (like eye movements or tapping) to help your brain reprocess difficult memories, the somatic piece adds awareness of what’s happening in your body—such as breath, tension, or sensations that often hold onto past experiences. This allows healing to happen not just in your mind, but throughout your whole self.
In our work together, Somatic EMDR can support you in moving through old patterns, easing the weight of past trauma, and finding more calm and balance in your daily life. Many clients notice a greater sense of safety, resilience, and connection to themselves as they learn to release what the body has been holding. It’s a compassionate, holistic way to create lasting change and feel more at home in your own skin.
